About the Characters

TO BE CONTINUED...

Tom Sawyer: A main character in the book, Tom is a mischievous boy who envies Huckleberry's freedom. As he goes on his adventures throughout the book, he becomes more mature, more noble, more...controlled. Tom begins to do things like accepting tight collars, Sunday school, and good table manners. Tom learns that in order to become a fully mature "man" he has to give off his disobedient and naughty self, but that doesn't mean he can't have some fun.

Becky(Rebecca) Thatcher: Becky is the daughter of Judge Thatcher. She is the second person that Tom is engaged to, and probably the last. Becky is very nice, smart, obedient, and neat. She is beautiful and dresses fancy(at least in Tom's opinion.) She has never been in trouble before. She quickly gained Tom's attention, being new to the town and all.

Huck(Huckleberry) Finn: Huck is the son of an abusive and drunk father who abandoned him at a very young age. He never had received much parentage and can smoke, not go to church or school, and wanders around freely. People disregard him, but he is actually pretty kind. He is good friends with Tom, they both go on adventures together, believe in superstitions, and are both "naughty." The Widow Douglas later adopts Huck and tries to civilize him.

Injun Joe: Injun Joe plots revenge against Dr. Robinson and the Widow Douglas. He was believed to murder 5 people in the village. He dressed as a Spaniard in town to keep his identity after being known as the murderer of Robinson, and accusing Muff Potter. He has a comrade and many dens. Later on, Huck and Tom discover his den--Number Two under the cross--and they get a little more than 12,000 dollars.

Muff Potter: Muff is the town drunk who is accused for the murder of Dr. Robinson. Muff is actually very kind and often helps the boys with fishing and untying knots, etc. He was quickly forgotten by most of the boys after being accused. Muff is saved by Tom (and Huck), and he is thankful to them for the rest of his life. Potter advises Tom and Huck to never drink, for it can take over your life.

Aunt Polly: Aunt Polly is the sister of Tom's passed mother, and adopts Tom as a son. Very religous, tries to train Tom and gets him ready and more mature, but Tom is just to wild. Aunt Polly wishes he would just be like Sid, be a little more obedient. She is tired of Tom, and does want to discipline him, but she just can't decide whether to or not. She is extremely kind, but Tom's behavior drives her wild. She often stops just before she is about to punish Tom.

Sid: Sid is Tom's half-brother and is a goody-two shoes that always tells on Tom. He likes to get him in trouble. Sid is a very neat, obedient, and very smart.

Mary: Mary is Tom's half-sister and has already received enough tickets for two bibles. She is very religious and has memorized many verses. Mary tries to help Tom memorize bible verses. She is very sweet. She always looks at Tom's positive sides and always finds something good to say about him.

Joe Harper: Joe is one of Tom's best friends, but he slowly diminishes his importance in the story. He joins Tom's gang of pirates, and they often play Robin Hood and Pirates at Jackson Island. Joe doesn't have that much extra time. Even though he plays with Tom and Huck, he still knows how to behave himself properly when it's the time.

The Welshman/Mr Jones: Mr. Jones is a kind old man with two sonswho lives near the Widow Douglas. Huck runs to him for help after hearing Injun Joe talk about hurting the widow. At first he doesn't believe Huck, but soon he realizes he is telling the truth and fully trusts him after this. He persuades the Widow to adopt Huck.
